Free Census Project

Welcome to the Home Page of one of the groups working on the Free Census project at http://freecen.rootsweb.com.  This is just one of many groups transcribing the census records for the website, a project that started in 1999.

And more volunteers are wanted to assist with this project.

Currently our group is working on the 1841 Census for Gloucestershire.  Click on progress link to the right left to see where we are up to, and to see what places are covered in which piece.  All census records are hand written, and while there are some good, easy to read pages, there will be some that may be hard to read.

Initially I will start you working on individual pages from a piece that our group is working on collectively  (currently piece 346), and then after a number of pages, the option of doing an entire book, or piece will be available  (sometimes it is possible for you to choice which one to do).

Transcriptions of all pages is done via spreadsheet (most spreadsheet programmes can be used), and I am able to provide scans of all pages for those who can not access them from elsewhere.

For every piece there are four stages involved in the transcriptions, of which, volunteers will be involved with the first two.  Stage one is the actual transcribing of the pages.  And stage two is the checking of pages already transcribed to ensure that they have been transcribed correctly.
