Eliza SMART
Eliza SMART was born on 29 May 1839 at
Moulton, Northampton. Like the rest of her family, she came to
New Zealand in 1850 on the Randolph. She died on 23 August 1901
in Templeton and was buried in the St Saviours Cemetery at
Templeton on 25 August 1901.
Eliza married William ELLIS on 30 December
1858 at the Wesleyan Church in Christchurch. William was baptised
on 12 September 1832 at Skipton In Craven, Yorkshire, England.
For a while William was a labourer at Templeton, but by 1882 he
did have his own block of land in the area and was farming it. He
died in Christchurch Hospital on 30 December 1894 and is buried
in the St Saviours Cemetery at Templeton.
They had ten children:
- Martha ELLIS was born about 1861 in
Christchurch and died on 3 April 1925 and is buried in
the Fairlie Cemetery at Fairlie. She married Thomas
SADLER about 1888. There were seven children.
- George Thomas ELLIS died about 1864
and was buried in the St Saviours Cemetery at Templeton
on 6 January 1864.
- George Thomas ELLIS was born on 27
August 1864 at Christchurch and was baptised on 16 July
1871 at St Saviours Church in Templeton. He died on 6
January 1928 in Christchurch and is buried in the St
Saviours Cemetery at Templeton. George married Sophia
PARISH about 1887.
- William ELLIS was born on 6 August
1867 in Christchurch and was baptised at the St Saviours
Churh in Templeton on 29 September 1867. He died on 2
July 1945 in Christchurch and is buried at the Linwood
Cemetery in Christchurch. He married Susan Cecilia MILLER
on 23 October 1890. They had five children.
- Sarah Ann ELLIS was born on 4 June
1869 in Christchurch and was baptised at the St Saviours
Church in Templeton on 8 August 1869. She married John
HARWOOD about 1890. They had two children. Her second
marriage was to George DEANS on 27 July 1910. There were
no children from this marriage. George was previously
married to Emily Smart, Sarah Ann ELLIS's Aunt, and there
were eight children from this marriage.
- Emily Elizabeth ELLIS was born on 30
May 1871 in Christchurch and was baptised at St Saviours
Church in Templeton on 16 July 1871. She died about 1877
in Christchurch and was buried in the St Saviours Church
Cemetery on 7 August 1877.
- Mary Twiggs ELLIS was born on 25 April
1874 in Christchurch and was baptised at St Saviours
Church on 16 August 1874. She died about 1970 in
Christchurch and is buried in the Bromley Cemetery in
Christchurch. Mary married Albert BRADLEY on 27 July 1899
at the Avonside Holy Trinity Church in Christchurch. They
had three children.
- Amy Kezia ELLIS was born on 22 July
1876 in Christchurch and was baptised at St Saviours
Church in Templeton on 5 November 1876. She died in
Christchurch on 16 June 1935 and was buried at the St
Saviours Church Cemetery in Christchurch on 18 June 1935.
Amy married Edward George HINTON on 2 May 1906 at St
Michaels Church in Christchurch. They had four children.
- Walter ELLIS was born on 11 November
1878 in Christchurch and was baptised at the St Saviours
Church in Templeton, Christchurch. He died on 16 November
1927 at the Timaru Hospital, Timaru and is buried in the
Fairlie Cemetery at Fairlie. He had three children.
- Amelia ELLIS was born on 9 December
1880 and was baptised at St Saviours Church in Templeton
on 17 April 1881. She married John MURPHY about 1912.
They had three children.
