George Thomas SMART
George Thomas SMART was born on 1 September
1853 in Christchurch and was baptised at St Michaels Church in
Christchurch on 1 January 1854. He was usually a labourer.
On 24 January 1878, George married Isabella
McDONALD at the St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Christchurch.
Isabella was born 24 August 1856 in Elginshire, Scotland and died on 8 October
1946 in Christchurch and is buried in the Linwood Cemetery in
Christchurch. After George's death, she married John Leslie BROWN
about 1900. Then she married Alexander PROTHEROE about 1911 and
they had one child. It is known that Alexander had children from
a previous marriage.
George died on 28 June 1896 in Christchurch
and is buried in the Linwood Cemetery in Christchurch.
They had nine children:
- Christina Stuart SMART was born about
1878 in Christchurch and died about 1972 in Levin. It is
known that she did not marry.
- Sarah Isabella "Sadie" SMART
was born about 1879 and married George Henry SHELLEY
about 1919.
- George Thomas SMART was born on 19
November 1880 in Christchurch and was baptised at St
Davids Presbyterian Church in Sydenham, Christchurch. He
died on 2 March 1945 in Ashburton and is buried in the
Chertsey Cemetery near Ashburton. George married Ella
Grace MOORE about 1903 and they had three children.

- Alexander McDonald SMART was born
about 1883 in Christchurch and died on 6 August 1915 at
Gallipoli.
- Mary Ann SMART was born on 10 January
1885 was was baptised on 5 July 1885 at St Davids
Presbyterian Church in Sydenham, Christchurch. She
married George ANDERSON about 1914. There are two known
children.
- Lettie Tarus SMART was born on 10
January 1888 and was baptised at St Michaels Church in
Christchurch on 23 July 1888, and died about 1971. She married George William
THORNE about 1911. There are two known children.
- Lena McGregor SMART was born on 15
March 1890 in Christchurch and was baptised at St
Saviours church in Lyttleton on 11 December 1891 and died
on 4 December 1985 in Napier. She married Frederick
Timothy DALY about 1908 and had five children.
- Vida Holly SMART was born on 27 June
1892 and was baptised at St Davids Presbyterian Church in
Sydenham, Christchurch on 29 July 1892.
- Robert Roy Gordon SMART was born about
1894 in Christchurch and died on 24 September 1964 in
Ashburton and is buried in the Ashburton Cemetery. He
married Rose Caroline BANKS about 1916. There are five
children.
