A well-known South Canterbury Identity, Mrs Margaret WILLIAMS
died recently.
She was born in the Mackenzie County on 1 January 1881. Her
parents, Mr and Mrs Elijah SMART were pioneers of Canterbury, her
father arriving in 1850 by the Randolph and her mother by the
Plaides (sic) about 1871 (sic).
Mrs WILLIAMS married James CALDER and their early married life
was spent on a farm at Hook, and then at Sherwood Downs in 1911.
After her husbands death she sold her property and moved to Wai
Opi, Temuka, where she was married to Mr W WILLIAMS. She lived in
Temuka until the time of her death.
She is survived by 4 daughters, a son and 4 sisters. Two brothers
were killed in the First World War (sic). She died on 13 January
1959 in Temuka.
WILLIAMS, Margaret - On 13 January 1959, at the residence of her
daughter, Mrs CH MURPHY, RIver Road, Temuka, beloved wife of the
late William WILLIAMS and loved daughter of the late Elijah and
Mary SMART and d 1 m of Jessie (Mrs HONEYMAN, Timaru), Mary (Mrs
HOLMES, Auckland), Margaret (Mrs Murphy, Temuka), David CALDER
(Temuka) and Betty (Mrs R McDOUGALL, Oamaru), aged 78 years. The
funeral will leave the residence, River Road, Temuka, this day,
Wednesday after a service commencing at 11:30am for the Fairlie
Cemetery. (W GALBRAITH).
